Ch 4.3 Projectile motion
Study notes for Projectile motion in PHSX 220 Physics I (w/ Calculus) at Montana State University: the big ideas, key formulas, a worked example, common mistakes and an exam tip. The same topic has endless practice questions and flashcards in Mathub.
Big ideas
- A projectile has $a_x = 0$ (constant horizontal velocity) and $a_y = -g$ (free fall vertically). Launch components: $v_{0x} = v_0\cos\theta$, $v_{0y} = v_0\sin\theta$.
- Time of flight comes from the vertical equation; horizontal range is then $x = v_{0x}t$. At the top $v_y = 0$ but $v_x$ is unchanged, so the speed at the top is $v_0\cos\theta$, not zero.
- Level ground shortcuts: $T = 2v_0\sin\theta/g$, $R = v_0^2\sin(2\theta)/g$ (max at $45^\circ$; complementary angles give equal ranges), $H = v_0^2\sin^2\theta/(2g)$.
- Horizontal launch from height $h$: $t = \sqrt{2h/g}$, $x = v_0 t$; impact speed $\sqrt{v_0^2 + 2gh}$ (energy works too).
- The trajectory is a parabola: $y = x\tan\theta - \dfrac{g x^2}{2v_0^2\cos^2\theta}$.
Key formulas
Components of motion
$$x = v_0\cos\theta\; t,\qquad y = y_0 + v_0\sin\theta\; t - \tfrac12 gt^2,\qquad v_y = v_0\sin\theta - gt$$
Level ground
$$T = \frac{2v_0\sin\theta}{g},\quad R = \frac{v_0^2\sin 2\theta}{g},\quad H = \frac{v_0^2\sin^2\theta}{2g}$$
Worked example
A ball is kicked at 20 m/s at $35^\circ$ above horizontal on level ground. Find the flight time, range and maximum height.
Show the solution
$v_{0x} = 16.4$, $v_{0y} = 11.5$ m/s. $T = 2(11.5)/9.8 = 2.34$ s. $R = 16.4(2.34) = 38.4$ m (or $400\sin70^\circ/9.8$). $H = 11.5^2/(19.6) = 6.71$ m.
Common mistakes
- Using the range formula when the landing height differs from the launch height.
- Saying the velocity is zero at the top (only v_y is).
- Forgetting that the horizontal speed never changes.
Exam tipUse the simulator on this site: set the launch angle to 30° and 60° and confirm the ranges match. Then try the same thing from a cliff and see why the shortcut fails.
